Art Salon Chinatown started as a new program series of solo exhibitions and accompanying artist talks, organized by curators Sonia Mak and Shervin Shahbazi in early 2018. ASC organized eight exhibitions in the first year. The Salon takes place at Realm, located in Los Angeles Chinatown’s historic Central Plaza, with the primary focus of showcasing contemporary Chinese American and Asian American artists.
Established in 2004 as a source for lovely objects for the home, REALM seeks to fortify and preserve Chinatown’s rich history and culture. REALM closed its doors as a store in March 2019 and reopened in May with Made in Asian America, an Art Salon Chinatown group exhibition featuring 12 Asian American artists.
